You can tell the difference when you visit a hotel where the owners contribute and spend time with their guests.
Bertie and the team are friendly and smiling, even under pressure.
Food was a high standard pub grub and very reasonable.
Lamb shank with mash was great. Chatted with my “neighbours” who had all had a great meal and come regularly.
Great value and large portions.
Highly recommended.

I have stayed at this Bed and Breakfast twice now it is everything you could want for a long weekend.
our room had been recently decorated, the shower room was of a high spec’ and the over all feel was one of a home from home.
Breakfast was a help your self buffet but there was also staff there to help with any special request.
This is not a five star glamorous hotel, this is a clean, well run, seaside B’N’B with a bar and the loveliest of staff.
I will always book The Ilfracombe (if I can, they are nearly always fully booked, so book well in advance) for a long weekend in Southend xXx
Room Tip: I have stayed in room number 4 twice and it was perfect for me.

A bit dated but a really nice place to stay, food is wonderful, rooms very cleanand its location is ideal as its not to noisy outside. we were able to park within the hotel grounds which is a real bonus.
A 10 min walk to the Cliffs Pavillion really well situated for everything.

“One for the family” Posted May 1, 2016

Stayed at the Ilfracombe on Saturday 30 April as a family group.
Because it was a bank holiday weekend the normal hotels we would stay in (eg Premier or Holiday Inn) were quite expensive, and we needed two rooms.
My daughter found the Ilfracombe on-line and booked what I would call an apartment as it was self contained with 2 bedrooms, bathroom, lounge and kitchen. The cost was about as much as just one room at the Premier Inn.
The decor was basic but everywhere was clean and tidy. My grandson loved it because we were all together and there were plenty of places to play hide-and-seek. We didn’t cook ourselves but had the hotels breakfast, which was excellent, plus the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff and owners were exceptional.

I booked this hotel to stay after an event at the Cliff’s Pavillion and as a result of surrounding hotels being much pricier, I went for this one! I am so glad I did – it was amazing. We didn’t have very high expectations but we were so happy with our choice/stay.

With regards to the location of the hotel, it was less than a 5 minute walk (or drunken stumble) from the Cliff’s and only a little further away from the casino and pleasure beach.

The host of the hotel – I think his name was Ben – was brilliant. Helpful. friendly and entertaining.
Our room was very very impressive. My boyfriend and I had booked a double and we were greeted by what seemed like a suite. A double bed, single bed, bay window with seats and a very impressive large layout.

We decided to eat at the hotel before the show given the cheap pricing and offer of food. The food choice was basic but was delicious – to top it off, the bar was really cheap too!
Breakfast was brilliant – unlimited hot breakfast buffet as well as free flowing juice, tea and coffee to compliment the cold choices of food. I have told everybody about this hotel so I really hope they choose to stay here over other more obvious choices when visiting Southend.

Stayed here for just one night in 2 bed apartment on way back from Sussex weekend break. Apartment was very spacious for 2 adults and 2 teenage children and although we booked it to mainly take advantage of half price Pleasure Island tickets we wouldn’t hesitate returning here. All staff were very welcoming and helped find free street parking on our departure so that we could make the short 10 minute walk to the seafront and Pleasure Island of course.

This hotel made our teams feel very welcome. No complaints whatsoever. Our teams stayed in both the hotel and the apartments. Very good value for money. Our teams stayed there for approx. 3 months. Definitely will be staying with you again when we work in the area. Thank you again.

A cosy hotel away from the seafront so it is quiet but only 5 minutes to walk there. Very handy for the Cliffs Pavilion – 5 mins walk. The staff are all friendly and helpful. Breakfast is adequate although food is left out in heated containers, and there are no pastries. A small selection of fruit is available. We enjoyed dinner- they have a 5 star hygiene rating. There is a small bar and lounge. The room was large and comfortable although overall the décor is tired and the bathroom suite scratched and old fashioned. The Michelangelo pictures on the wall were slightly offputting. Heating and hot water were plentiful. Strangely, although there was shampoo and bath gel, there were no body lotions. There was a kettle, teabags and coffee but no hot chocolate although you can order this at the bar (packet version). It was clean and welcoming and the wifi was free and worked well. There was a distant sea view from one angle of the room if the sky was clear.

I’ve never visited this hotel with my husband, but it is magically romantic. I so wish he was with me when I visit this place. It is beautiful, clean, quaint and the owners go above and beyond. The breakfast is amazing too. It is located atop a hill overlooking the sea yet close enough to the high street to shop, get your hair and nails done, and so on. I stay here every time I visit my friends in the area. I wouldn’t consider anywhere else. The price is extremely reasonable. Love this place.

Good location. Exceptionally friendly team running the hotel. The bar is competitively priced but the service is quite exceptional. It is so relaxing, it becomes a home from home. Like most hotels, the breakfast buffet sits under hot lights. Consequently, breakfast it is not a memorable feature of the hotel. But it all works and they are infectiously friendly which always makes the experience relaxing. We’ll keep going back.
