‘We found this hotel purely by chance last year(2013) when we came to a concert at the cliffs pavilion, and what a little gem this hotel is, we have been back three time since then.
In This family run hotel the rooms are clean, well equipped with tea & coffee making facilities, dvd player, iron, trouser press, mini fridge and sky sports 1 as standard.
The food is top notch (I can especially recommend the Cajun chicken and the slow cooked lamb shank)!! And there is plenty of it. And the breakfast is wonderful, it is a buffet self-service style so you can have as much or as little as you want.
You always get a warm welcome with nothing to much trouble, everyone works so hard to make your stay an enjoyable and memorable one. It’s the little touches that make all the difference.
All I can say is keep up the good work Bertie and the rest of the crew, and we`ll see you again soon. Mr Andrew Bowyer’

Hidden outside London but within very easy reach, the hotel is not only spotlessly clean but also boasts some of the best hospitality I have had as a business traveller. The staff have a welcome that is not only sincere but also leaves you with a feel good factor. I have stayed here on a number of occasions and plan to come back in the summer as a tourist. Good people, clean rooms and very reasonably priced. You wont be disappointed.

Easter weekend in Southend is a bit of a habit for me now. This (2014) was the fifth time I’ve driven down from Aberdeen, to stay at The Ilfracombe Hotel.
After 10 hours behind the wheel and arriving several hours early (my miscalculation), the staff did their best to get me into my room ASAP for a nap. The breakfast is fantastic, probably the best I’ve had in a hotel and you can eat as much as you like. The hot servers are continually filled with freshly cooked food and you can help yourself as many times as you want. I also had one evening meal on this trip and that was of excellent quality and value too.
The rooms are warm, comfortable and clean and the owner, his family and staff are always polite, professional and attentive.
It’s very close to the seafront and a 10 minute walk from the town center and railway station. Parking can be an issue but it’s never caused me any great concerns albeit I’ve had to drive round the block a couple of times to get a space – no biggie really. It’s very reasonably priced too.
I’d have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to any one and all goilng well I’l be back for years to come.
Thanks Bertie, family and staff.

I dont write many reviews but feel the need to let people know of this very popular gem. On arrival the check in was welcoming and quite quick. The room was more than ample in size and very very clean. Many other guest houses could learn from the ilfracombe. The menu was very good and prices are cheap. The meal we had was lovely and the chef surpassed our needs. Breakfast is an all you like buffet breakfast bar with many side plates available. Yoghurts, toast, cereal , juice and full english fayre. So to sum up, friendly chatty staff, comfy beds in rooms that are big enough / very clean and the food is great. Plus its very close to the seafront and cliff pavillions.

Room Tip: room 16 was great for my wife and I. At the rear and no noise at all.

We were based at the hotel in one of the apartments for 18 weeks, the staff were friendly and more than happy to help if we needed anything. The rooms were immaculately clean and their eye for detail was second to none. the breakfast is in an all you can eat buffet format but if there is anything you wanted that was not on the buffet the staff would be happy to prepare it for you.

I would definitely recommend this hotel in the future Stayed September 2013 – February 2014, travelled on business

This is a traditional small seaside hotel, some reviewers refer to it being four star, It is rated a four star “Guest House” It is clearly not a four star Hotel. It’s a little tired here and there but perfectly warm and comfortable, the staff very friendly. Good English breakfast served from a hot buffet. Good location 10-15 min walk to the centre and good value, would stay here again, Stayed February 2014, travelled as a couple

We stayed here for one night in January. We had room 18 on first floor. Very spacious and clean. Large TV. Good breakfast, help yourself. Toaster on each table, nice touch. It’s a very traditional hotel in terms of decor, so if you like modern, this isn’t for you. All staff very pleasant. Free WiFi in room with code readily available without asking! Towels not very fluffy, but that’s a minor drawback. Also, not even one packet of complimentary biscuits in the room, which was a bit disappointing but not major!

Room Tip: The web site said bay window OR Mediterranean bathroom. Room 18 had both, with a side view of the sea

Have stayed here just for one night in a single room.Had a very good nights sleep, followed by a brilliant breakfast.(Buffet style including the Full English classics) . The location is excellent and this hotel has their own car park with about 6 spaces at the rear. Will certainly return. Stayed February 2014, travelled solo

Stayed here for 2 nights. Cosy hotel/guest house in a convenient position just back from the sea front and a short walk to the town centre. We had a reasonably sized room which was warm, clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. Some aspects of our room needed a bit of upgrading, the shower did not flow well and the hair dryer produced tepid air only!! Minor grumbles only. Overall it was good value for money and we would be happy to stay here again. Stayed February 2014, travelled as a couple
